Birmingham Children’s Hospital required a sensory garden for seriously ill children. This project was awarded to Newman Gauge who are interior designers, but also handle any more intricate design projects such as this. We were awarded the building work which consisted of creating a visually stimulating and sensory garden area within the middle of the hospital.
The floor was initially concreted and then covered in crushed glass which was then coated in various bright colours which appealed to children. Because this was in a quadrangle in the middle of the hospital, we had to think carefully about drainage and access etc. There were various technical difficulties then the project was finished by installing quality timber musical instruments and garden planters as well as seating.
It is easy to see from the photographs that poorly children would feel comfortable and relaxed in the seating area, at a very difficult time in their lives. Similarly, it was a very satisfying project for us to complete as it was both unusual and technically challenging at the same time; but the end result very satisfying.
