This is a data centre situated in Bordesley, Birmingham and is a high-security building to store data. The original building was an old factory that had to be converted from top to bottom. We were subcontractors to Mace and our job essentially involved constructing all of the walls, these were made of concrete blocks and were 5.5 metres high, in all we laid 38,000 blocks.
This had to be done at high speed as it was a very tight schedule. We were also asked to do numerous miscellaneous jobs, demolishing walls, drainpipes, steel work and also rendering work that was very high specification as this building has to be secure, so walls 250mm thick the reinforced with steel mesh both sides and then rendered.
Because of the nature of the work it was very high security and Health & Safety was at a premium, no one was allowed onto the site without a hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, safety shoes and hi-visibility clothing. Total value of the contract was just short of £600,000.00.
